A gun was found in the possession of a student at East Lee County High School Friday afternoon

The Lee County School District confirmed the incident is being investigated by the Lee County Sheriff Office. The East Lee County High principal said in an email to parents that no students or the school were threatened.

The principal didn’t identify the student found with the gun but said they would be disciplined.

School officials said a student provided a tip and a teacher immediately used the school’s security notification system so that administrators and school resource officers could respond.

“Good afternoon Jaguar family,

This is Melissa Robery, principal of East Lee County HS.  I send this message to inform you that one of our students was found in possession of a firearm today.  This situation is currently being investigated by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

At no time were any students or our school threatened. Having the weapon on campus is a violation of law and the Student Code of Conduct.

There is zero tolerance at East Lee County High School and the School District of Lee County for this kind of behavior so in addition to the legal consequences, the student(s) involved will be disciplined to the fullest extent.

We are very grateful for and want to thank the student who provided the tip and the teacher who immediately used our security notification system so that our administrators and SROs could quickly respond.

As parents, please take this opportunity to speak to your child about school safety and the importance of reporting information that may compromise their safety and the safety of others.
