The meaning of the phrase “partners in crime” changes dramatically just by simply adding one very important word: prevention. So, why is it important that communities and law enforcement become partners in crime prevention?
Research shows there is a link between high crime rates and socially disorganized areas. In other words, communities of residents who commit to the ideal of a “watchful community” in which citizens observe and report suspicious activity typically benefit from and enjoy lower crime rates than those communities who don’t.
In addition, a watchful community helps remove the opportunity for criminal activity because neighbors know neighbors; they take seriously residential security prevention, feel a sense of ownership and unity, and meet together regularly to create a strong neighborhood network.
A “watchful community” may have different names such as Neighborhood Watch, Crime Watch, or Community Watch, but its purpose and commitment by those involved remains the same: bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make your community a safer place to live, work and play.
