Did you know that Governor DeSantis recently suspended some school scholarships?
Last Friday, Governor Ron DeSantis directed our Florida Department of Education [DoE] to suspend four schools from the state’s school-choice scholarship program due to alleged “direct ties to the Chinese Communist Party.”
According to a news release from the governor’s office, “Through a thorough investigation, [the Florida DoE] has determined that Lower and Upper Sagemont Preparatory Schools in Weston, Parke House Academy in Winter Park, and Park Maitland School in Winter Park have direct ties to the CCP and their connections constitute and imminent threat to the health, safety, and welfare of these school’s students and the public.”
In 2021, DeSantis signed bills, HB 1523 ands HB 7017 into law that were designed to thwart foreign meddling in Florida’s government and education system.
Additionally, in 2022, DeSantis signed a bill to create a “Victims of Communism Day” each year on November 7th. Florida public-school teachers are required to spend at least 45 minutes teaching students regarding the sufferings of those who have lived under Communist and totalitarian governments.
