Did you Know?

Did you know that the state Department of Management Services is seeking a proposal where there would be a prohibition of actions or displays that are “harmful” to children from taking place at our state capitol?

A number of individuals, group members and advocacy groups which hold demonstrations at the Capitol voiced their opposition to such a request during a public hearing that took place last Thursday.

NR Hines who is a criminal justice policy strategist with the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, stated that part of the proposal is “unconstitutional.” Hines went on to state that, “Protests are a crucial means of expressing disagreement with your government.” Hines also stated that the proposal contains unconstitutional language regarding criteria for trespassing and removal by law enforcement such as the Capitol Police, as being a violation of rights.

The latest version of the proposed rule dropped a provision that would have prohibited conduct in state buildings that “creates loud or unusual noise(s).”

For those interested, the Florida Department of Management Services is accepting written public comment on the proposal until December 8, 2022.
