Did you know that a police reform bill is headed to Governor DeSantis for signature?
Although no one is sure if DeSantis will sign the bill, the Florida Legislature which passed the bill, along with Florida Attorney General Moody as well as the ACLU and others are all hopeful for DeSantis’ signature.
State Rep. Fentrice Driskell, D-Tampa made comment regarding DeSantis possible signing the bill, “I would hope that he would listen” and “Not only (listen) to the Legislature, but to the voices of the 21 million we represent, and sign this good bill into law.”
The bill known as HB 7051 includes:
- Improved use of force training for law enforcement
- Limits on when chokeholds can be used
- Better record-keeping to prevent the hiring of bad officers
- Prevents the arrest of children age 7 and younger unless they commit forcible felonies
