School Board Member Requests Governor DeSantis Investigation of Lee County School District for Waste, Fraud, and Abuse

Today, Gwynetta Gittens, District 5 representative of the Lee County School Board requested Governor Ron DeSantis formally investigate the Lee County School District for waste, fraud, and abuse.

In her letter to the governor Gittens stated, “We are a School District in crisis. I implore you to investigate the Lee County School District, the Lee County Superintendent of Schools, and the Lee County School Board for the sake of the children and taxpayers of Lee County.”

In her letter to Governor DeSantis, Gittens alleges the Lee County School District is breaching the public trust by purposefully violating state statutes, causing financial mismanagement and impropriety Board members are putting their personal agendas before children and the proper management of taxpayer money, time, and resources, said Gittens.

“There is definitely a need for an investigation”, Gittens’s complaint outlines numerous statutory and school district policy violations including Sunshine Law violations, misuse of public positions, employment discrimination, financial mismanagement, fraud, and abuses of power.” To have allegations Gittens said, “According to the Oath of Ethics, I swore fiduciary duty to provide oversight and to report any concerns that I observe. I have to no avail consistently brought these concerns to a non-responsive board, only to be met with increasing retaliation”

The Lehigh Acres Gazette asked the Lee County School District for comment and is want we received back from Rob Spicker Assistant Director, Media Relations & Public Information, “The District has no comment at this time because we have not received a copy of the complaint.
