Lehigh Acres man involved in shooting at child custody exchange gets five years in state prison

A Lehigh Acres man will serve 5 years in prison after a shooting during a 2020 child custody exchange left one man shot twice.

Misael Jose Velez, 21, of Lehigh Acres, pleaded guilty to  a charge of aggravated assault without intent to kill and child neglect and was sentenced before Judge Margaret Steinbeck.

The sentences will be served concurrently, and Velez was given credit for two days served in Lee County Jail. A 5-year probation was also issued.

A Lee County Sheriff’s Office report on the July 18 incident said the mother of a female child had been arguing over child custody issues on the phone with Velez prior to the exchange.
