Lehigh Acres man dies after being shot Tuesday night in Cape Coral

Cape Coral police are investigating a Tuesday night shooting that left a man dead in a residence on Southeast 16th Place.

Police reported they responded at 10 p.m. to the shooting in the 900 block and found a man who had been shot, according to a news release from Master Sgt. Patrick O’Grady.

The man, identified as Nelson Leyva, 28, of Lehigh Acres, was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Leyva’s death is considered a homicide, but whether charges will be filed is still under investigation, Master Cpl. Phillip Mullen said. 

His next of kin has been notified. 

The Major Crime’s detectives and forensic specialists assumed the investigation, which is active and ongoing, O’Grady said.

Police will send out updates as more information is gathered.
