Did you know that while millions of Americans, including we Floridians, are forced to stay at home because of the Wuhan (COVID-19) Virus, we can find ourselves bored, irritated and even frustrated as what some psychologists call “cabin fever”, sets in. There are ways to combat these negative feelings by implementing things that we can do with our children and grandchildren.

It may come as a surprise to some American parents who now and unexpectedly spend their daytime with their children, rather than at work, It was only several generations ago that mothers were home with their children as the primary caretaker, and helping their children with their school projects and homework as a normal day. Today, many mothers struggle with patience in teaching or spending time with their kids. No fear! that “P-word” with your children/grandchildren can be achieved if parents take their time, along with a prayer and a deep breath.
Activities with your children are vitally important and especially now during stressful times, children need both their parents, the most! According to Gail Fernandez, MD, “Children from birth to adulthood need time and attention from their parents.” Dr. Fernandez goes on to share that “The importance of this time is multifold: The child feels important and loved. He or she has an opportunity to model parent’s behavior. The parent can observe and learn about the child’s strengths and weakness in order to guide them.” And, ‘The child has a chance to voice their thoughts and feelings” thus, “The parent and child develop a stronger bond.”
The importance of quality time with your children during this pandemic cannot be overstated. Here are some ideas to help your child through this difficult time,
- Make homework fun and exciting. If you look forward to helping your child, they will eventually also look forward to their homework time with you.
- Take virtual tours online.
- Use educational board games
- Try a new science project together.
