Bring your fully charged tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Note: Please bring any passwords you may need for downloading apps. Kindle users will also need an Amazon account and their password for accessing it.

Chess Anyone?

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. This program is provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

Book Discussion: “This Tender Land” by William Kent Krueger

3:30 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 3

1932, Minnesota – the Lincoln School is a pitiless place where hundreds of Native American children, forcibly separated from their parents, are sent to be educated. A group of orphans steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi and a place to call their own. Read the book now and meet the author at the Southwest Florida Reading Festival Saturday, March 7.

Intermediate Computer Skills

10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4

Learn intermediate computer skills with the guidance of a technology instructor. Using Windows 10, this class covers a variety of topics including identifying keyboard shortcuts, using the control panel, removing programs, backing up files and more. Space is limited and registration is required.

Writers’ Workshop

6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4

Join local writers as they meet each month to share their work, give feedback and discuss various literary art forms including poetry, short stories, novels and more. All are welcome.

Computer Q&A

3 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 19

Receive personalized help and instruction with any computer issues that you might be having. Questions about hardware, software, programs and apps will be answered by one of our tech-savvy librarians. Please bring your fully charged tablets, phones, e-readers, laptops, or other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Laptops will be available for issues that are not device specific. Note: Please bring any passwords you may need for accessing your device and the services or applications that you have questions about.

Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement

Join us for a lecture and flute performance by Galen Abdur-Razzaq. He is a riveting speaker with encyclopedic knowledge of the history of jazz and the civil rights movement.

East County Craft Club: Romantic Wreath

2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8

Design your own ornamental wreath in this craft program for adults. All materials will be provided. This program is intended for adults 18 and over. Registration is required.

Word and Excel Basics

10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11

Our technology instructor provides a basic introduction to Word and Excel for new users. Using Microsoft Office 2016, learn how to create and save documents, format pages, change fonts and create basic spreadsheets. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Knitting Nook

5 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 12, 26

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share projects, ideas and techniques. Participants should bring their own projects; basic materials are available for newcomers.

David Kilbride Sings Old Favorites

2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14

Guitarist David Kilbride performs the music of the 40s, 50s and 60s. Join us for old favorites and classic tunes.

Social Media Basics

10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18

What are tweets and status updates? How do I video chat with family and friends? Our technology instructor teaches essential skills to make use of today’s top social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Skype. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Quilting Anyone?

11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21

Express your creativity through fabric. New and beginning quilters can learn techniques and design a square. Presented by the Southwest Florida Quilters Guild. Participants must bring their own sewing machines. Registration is required.

Geocaching

12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22

Enjoy geocaching at your library. This event is open to all levels of geocaching experience, from first-timer to expert. Geocaching, a treasure hunting sport using GPS-enabled devices, is family friendly and fun.

Children’s Programs

Family Storytime

11 a.m. Saturdays, Feb. 1, 15

For children through age 5. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Toddler Tales

10 a.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25

For ages 18 – 36 months. This interactive and active time for toddlers and their caregiver is designed to advance prereading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

Baby Rhyme Time

10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26

For babies up to 18 months. During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance. Caregivers are encouraged to model proper storytime etiquette by remaining in the room and participating with baby during this program.

Preschool Storytime

10 a.m. Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27

For ages 3 – 5. Children attend this program independently while the caregiver waits nearby. Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books, and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun.

Kids Read Down Fines

4 – 5 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27

1 – 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only and applies only to charges on overdue materials. Please bring your library card.

Read to Dogs

11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children.

Family Movie Matinee

2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10

Join us for a book-to-film themed family movie. You bring the snacks and we’ll provide the seating and the show. Movie titles available upon request.

Presidents Day Family Craft

2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17

Join us for a special Presidents Day family craft. We will provide the space and supplies, just bring your creativity for an afternoon of fun.

STEAM Saturday

2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22

Join us for a family-friendly STEAM exploration. Each month will feature a different activity based on the aspects of STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. This is a great opportunity for parents and kids to build, learn and play together. For children and teens age 5-17.

Join us for a virtual reality program with Oculus Go. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced user, anyone can try out these VR headsets to play games, use apps or browse the internet. This program is for ages 13 and up.
