August Programs at East County Regional Library

Next month’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adult Programs

Beginning Computer Skills

10 a.m. Fridays, Aug. 2, 9

A technology instructor will cover a variety of topics including using a mouse, establishing an email account and using library online resources. Space is very limited and registration is required.

East County Craft Club: Glam Hanging Candle Holders

1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3

Decorate a one-of-a-kind hanging candle holder with wire and beads in this fun craft program for adults age 18 and over. All materials will be provided. Participants with their own jewelry pliers are encouraged to bring them. This program is intended for adults over 18.

Book Discussion: “Women in Sunlight” by Frances Mayes

3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5

Four American women become unexpected friends during a magical year in Tuscany marked by a writer’s complicated relationship with the subject of her biography, long-postponed dreams, and shifting senses of adventures and bravery.

11 a.m. Mondays, Aug. 5, 19

Receive personalized help downloading e-books, movies, music, and more from Overdrive and Hoopla, two of Lee County Library System’s largest online content providers. Bring your fully charged tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Please bring any passwords you may need for downloading apps. Kindle users will also need an Amazon account and their password for accessing it.

Chess Anyone?

2  p.m. Mondays, Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. This program is provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

Intermediate Computer Skills

10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6

Learn intermediate computer skills with the guidance of a technology instructor. Using Windows 10, this class covers a variety of topics including identifying keyboard shortcuts, using the control panel, removing programs, backing up files and more. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Writers’ Workshop

6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6

Join local writers as they meet each month to practice, share, and discuss various literary art forms including poetry, short stories, novels, memoirs and plays. All are welcome.

English Café

6 p.m. Mondays, Aug. 12, 19, 26

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

Word and Excel Basics

10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13

A technology instructor provides a basic introduction to Word and Excel for new users. Using Microsoft Office 2016, learn how to create and save documents, format pages, change fonts and create basic spreadsheets. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Knitting Nook

5 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 14, 28

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share projects, ideas and techniques. Participants should bring their own projects; basic materials are available for newcomers.

Library Bingo

1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17

Try your luck and enjoy an afternoon of fun with library bingo.

C.R.A.A.P. Doesn’t Just Happen: Finding Trustworthy Health Information in the Age of Fake News and Miracle Cures

6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28

Lee Health medical librarians share tips for finding reliable health information at the Lee Health Libraries and on the internet. Learn how the acronym C.R.A.A.P. (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose) can help you evaluate websites and other consumer health sources. This program will be presented in English and Spanish.

Children’s Programs

Kids Read Down Fines

4 – 5 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

10 – 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17

Children and teens can earn a credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only and applies only to charges on overdue materials. Please bring your library card.

Chess Anyone?

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. This program is provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

R.E.A.D. to Dogs

11 a.m. – Noon Saturday, Aug. 10

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children.

Library Bingo

Enjoy an afternoon of fun with library bingo.

Toddler Tales

10 – 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27

For ages 18-36 months. Toddlers love activity and the chance to practice their growing language skills. This interactive and active time for toddlers and their caregiver is designed to advance prereading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, finger-plays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

Baby Rhyme Time

10 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28

During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and finger-plays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance. Caregivers are encouraged to model proper storytime etiquette by remaining in the room and participating with baby during this program.

Preschool Storytime

10 – 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29

For ages 3-5. Children attend this program independently while the caregiver waits nearby. Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books, and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun.

Library Teen Talk

2 – 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 20, 27

Teens in grades 9 – 12 are welcome for a weekly discussion about current events, everyday life, library resources and more. Teens will be encouraged to post an answer to a weekly question. Socializing during this event will be highly encouraged, so bring a friend.
