Book Discussion: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

Lenora Allbright is 13 when her father convinces her mother, Cora, to forgo their inauspicious existence in Seattle and move to Kaneq, Alaska. Never was a family less perpared for the reality of Alaska, the long, cold winters and isolation. Even first love must endure unimaginable hardship and tragedy as the wilderness tries to claim more victims.

Intermediate Computer Skills

10 a.m. Tuesday, July 2

Learn intermediate computer skills with the guidance of our technology instructor. Using Windows 10, this class covers a variety of topics including identifying keyboard shortcuts, using the control panel, removing programs, backing up files and more. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Writers’ Workshop

6 p.m. Tuesday, July 2

Join local writers as they meet each month to practice, share and discuss various literary art forms including poetry, short stories, novels, memoirs and plays. All are welcome.

East County Craft Club: Miniature Fairy Gardens

Celebrate the the magical world of fairies. Create a magical miniature fairy garden in this fun craft program for adults. All materials will be provided. This program is intended for adults age 18 and over. Registration is required.

Bring your fully charged tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Note: Please bring any passwords you may need for downloading apps. Kindle users will also need an Amazon account and their password for accessing it.

Word and Excel Basics

A technology instructor will provide a basic introduction to Word and Excel for new users. Using Microsoft Office 2016, learn how to create and save documents, format pages, change fonts and create basic spreadsheets. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Knitting Nook

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share projects, ideas and techniques. Participants should bring their own projects; basic materials are available for newcomers.

Intergalactic Coloring for Adults

Coloring books are no longer just for kids. In fact, adult coloring books are all the rage. Enjoy soothing music and a relaxing atmosphere as you color the universe as you see it. Participants may bring their own materials or use those provided.

What are tweets and status updates? How do I video chat with family and friends? Our technology instructor teaches essential skills to make use of today’s top social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Skype. Space is very limited and registration is required.

The Music of the Stars and Planets

6 p.m. Wednesday, July 17

Did you know that stars vibrate, or oscillate? NASA’s new planet-hunting satellite, TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite), is able to detect these oscillations in thousands of nearby stars. In this program, learn how we use these signals to understand both the stars themselves and the planets that we are discovering in orbit around them.

Paint Your “You”niverse

The Summer Reading theme, a Universe of Stories, collides in an interactive DIY painting experience with Paint Your “You”niverse. You decide what your “You”niverse looks like and let those paints fly.

A Universe of Animals with Naples Zoo

11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9

Slithering, swinging, and scurrying all over the world, animals of all shapes and sizes explore the world around them in surprising ways. Students will see how well they can use their own senses, and discover how animals from lions to alligators to snakes use their sensational senses to survive in the wild. Registration is required.

Family Storytime

For families with babies and children through age five. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Star Stories: Greek Myths

The night sky is full of star constellations. The ancient Greeks named the star constellations after their awesome myths and folktales. Katie Adams performs these myths with colorful shadow puppets, storytelling and audience participation. Registration is required.

STEAM Storytime

10 a.m. Saturday, July 20

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math are the name of the game for this storytime. Children in grades K-5 are invited to this Universe of Stories STEAM storytime featuring books and a special learning activity.

Outer Space Science

11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23

Professor DoDad and his new friend Darcy will share facts about the solar system, space travel, gravity, stars and much more. DoDad’s Lab is full of audience participation, experiments, original music, learning and laughter. Registration is required.
