American Airlines flight 2270 makes an emergency landing at RSW

An airplane made an emergency landing at Southwest Florida International Airport Sunday evening.

American Airlines flight 2270 from Miami to Dallas made a diversion to RSW around 4:40 p.m. because of a mechanical issue, according to RSW spokesperson Victoria Moreland.

One hundred and ninety-two passengers were unloaded from the plane and were directed to the ticket counter at RSW trying to book other flights, according to witnesses.

According to passengers on the flight, they were told that mechanics were looking at the plane before boarding.

Then, they said the plane was good to go, so the flight took off.

The plane was in the air for 45 minutes over Tampa, when it landed in Fort Myers after the pilot originally said it would be landing in Tampa.

According to American Airlines, the plane will remain overnight at RSW, and the passengers will be put up in a hotel.

The plane is scheduled to fly to Dallas Fort Worth tomorrow at 9 a.m., weather permitting.
