If the answer is yes then you are in luck. The East County Regional Library will be hosting activities for the whole family the whole month of December. There is something for everyone to enjoy. If you wish to attend one of the activities and would like more information please call (239) 533-4200.

December Programs at East County Regional Library

East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adult Programs

Beginning Computer Skills

Part 1: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2

Part 2: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9

A technology instructor will cover a variety of topics including using a mouse, establishing an email account and using library online resources. Space is very limited and registration is required.

 

Sky and Scope

3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2

Learn the basics of astronomy and what you need to get started. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate how to use free software and inexpensive telescopes and binoculars to explore the night sky.

 

I Can Do That! Craft: Holidays in Your Heart

2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3

Don’t let Santa have all the fun this season. Bonnie Frato will teach patrons how to bring glitz and glamour to their holiday decorations with festive holiday swags. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

 

Book Discussion: “Nevermore” by Laird Hunt

3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5

Follows the experiences of Ash Thompson, who becomes a folk hero after she abandons her farmer husband and disguises herself as a man to go fight for the South during the Civil War. Registration is required.

Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Mondays, Dec. 5, 12, 19

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

 

English Café

6 p.m. Mondays, Dec. 5, 12

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

 

Intermediate Computer Skills

10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6

Learn intermediate computer skills with the guidance of a technology instructor. Using Windows 7, this class covers a variety of topics including identifying keyboard shortcuts, using the control panel, removing programs, backing up files and more. Space is very limited and registration is required.

 

There’s A (Library) App for That!

11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6: e-books and Audio e-books

11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13: Movies, Music and More

Learn about some of the free apps you can use to take library content on the go. Class participants should bring their app-enabled mobile device and know their library card information to get the most out of this class. Registration is required.

 

Writers’ Workshop

6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6

Join local writers as they meet each month to practice, share, and discuss various literary art forms. Meetings may vary to include classes, speakers and readings. All are welcome. Registration is requested.

 

Scrabble Club

9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10

Put your word-building skills to the test with Scrabble enthusiasts of all levels. Bring your own Scrabble board or use one of ours. All ages are welcome to attend. Registration is required.

 

Word and Excel Basics

10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13

A technology instructor will provide a basic introduction to Word and Excel for new users. Using Office 2007, learn how to create and save documents, format pages, change fonts and create basic spreadsheets. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Knitting Nook

5 p.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 14, 28

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and projects. Attendees should bring their own projects, however basic materials are available for newcomers. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

 

Winter Geocaching Event

2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17

Join us for our winter geocaching event, open to all levels of geocaching experience and those just curious. Geocaching, a treasure hunting sport using GPS-enabled devices, is family friendly and fun. Registration is required.

 

Social Media Basics

10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20

A technology instructor will teach essential skills to make use of today’s top social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Skype. Space is very limited and registration is required.

11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20

Receive personalized help downloading e-books, movies, music, and more from the library’s online library. Bring your tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Registration is required.

 

Storytime

Baby Rhyme Time

10 a.m. Thursdays, Dec. 1, 8

During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance.

 

Family Storytime

10:30 a.m. Thursdays, Dec. 1, 8

Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of pre-reading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

 

Toddler Tales

10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7

This interactive and active time for toddlers and their favorite caregiver is designed to advance pre-reading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7

Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun.

Kids Read Down Fines

4 – 5 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 8, 22

Children and teens can earn a credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only.

 

R.E.A.D. to Dogs

11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children.

 

Drop-in Craft

9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17

Stop by and create a festive holiday decoration.
