FDLE agents established an “active crime scene” near Wheeler Road and 14th Place in a rural area of Hendry County — just across the border from Lehigh Acres.
Investigators gathered in a wooded area down a dirt road. Neighbors said it’s frequented by four-wheelers and other off-road vehicles.
A Hendry County Sheriff’s Office squad car guarded the entrance to the scene.
Several family members of Alberta Harris, the Fort Myers woman missing since earlier this month, arrived around 1:30 p.m. and stayed for about two hours.
They said authorities told them it’s possible a body found was that of Harris, and also said they were near the same location Saturday and saw buzzards circling the area, but didn’t go far enough into the woods to search. Teenagers discovered the body on Wednesday.
Harris, 50, was last seen April 9.
She was reported missing two days later when she didn’t show up to work as a bus driver for the Lee County School District.
Her vehicle, a silver 2005 GMC Yukon, was found in the Fleamasters parking lot on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on April 11. Police said a window was smashed and Harris’ niece said there was blood inside.
