Update as of 12:45 pm
Lee County deputies are investigating a “workplace death” at a Lehigh Acres concrete company.
It happened around 4:50 a.m. at Coastal, 421 Leonard Boulevard N.
A family member identified the victim today as 23-year–old Zavarius “Zee” Philius.
Employees at the plant told the victim’s mother Philius was killed when he got caught in a cement mixer.
Philius’ mother told us he dropped something in the mixer, which was off at the time. When he went to retrieve it, the mixer somehow turned on.
Philius had only worked at the plan for a few months.
The victim’s mother said the plant was closed down last week, and employees were told there were mechanical issues with the cement mixers.
A representative from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration told us someone from their Tampa office is on the way to investigate the death.
The business is closed for the day, but a sign in a window indicates it will reopen Thursday.
