Police are searching for the suspect in a downtown Fort Myers shooting that left one person dead and five others injured.

It is estimated 20,000 people attended the event.  Witnesses say downtown was packed with so many people, they were standing shoulder to shoulder.

The shooting happened at Los Cabos, 2224 First Staround 11:45 p.m. — while the annual Zombicon event was going on.

Expavious Tyrell Taylor, who turned 20 on Oct. 5, was killed in the shooting. Fort Myers police said Sunday morning that a sixth victim has been discovered. That person received a non life-threatening wound and refused medical attention. Four others were also treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The organizers of Zombicon, Pushing Daizies, Inc. released a statement early Sunday, saying they are deeply saddened by the news. “We take the safety of our patrons very seriously and take precautions in hiring security and police officers for our annual event,” said Rachel Telfor, security coordinator.

“Our prayers go out to the family members and individuals involved in the incident” said Janet DeMarco, founder. “We are extremely confident in the Fort Myers Police Department and the actions they are taking to apprehend the assailant. Their response was quick and efficient to the incident.”

Mayor Randy Henderson released a statement expressing “profound sadness” over the shooting.
“We pray for all involved in this senseless act of violence. I want to reaffirm our commitment to reign in these criminals and assure all citizens of law enforcement’s relentless pursuit of the perpetrators,” Henderson said.

“While traveling out of the state to a family event I have learned of the tragic shooting downtown and the death of Mr. Expavious Tyrell Taylor, and others injured with non life threatening wounds. On behalf of myself and Council I want to express profound sadness and condolences to the family Mr. Tayor. We pray for all involved in this senseless act of violence. I want to reaffirm our commitment to reign in these criminals and assure all citizens of law enforcement’s relentless pursuit of the perpetrators. With the aid of alert citizens and cameras we remain confident in capturing and bringing to justice, those who have attacked our citizens.

“These random acts of violence will be deterred and ultimately eradicated through the deployment of cameras, arrest, and successful prosecution of the perpetrators. I want to thank all citizens who have shown bravery and resolve in assisting law enforcement through their capturing of these heinous acts with personal cameras and testimony. With everyone pulling in the same direction we will solve this problem.

“Moreover, I want to thank City Manager Saeed Kazemi, Chief Eads, FMPD, and Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Sherriff Scott, for their team work, together with other law enforcement agencies who remain steadfast and engaged to solve this random violence. Over the past several weeks numerous arrest have been made and violent criminals with long felony histories have been booked and jailed.”
