Bus Stop Safety for Parents

It is that time of year again. Summer is ending and school is beginning. Children will be walking to and waiting at bus stops all around Lee County in the coming days. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office wants to share some reminders to help keep our children safe at the bus stop.

1. When walking to the bus stop it is best to walk in a group or with another friend.

2. Watch for any strangers hanging around the bus stop either on foot, riding a bicycle or in a car. Tell an adult as soon as you can.

3. If someone asks you to come over to them or wants to give you something, say “NO” and tell an adult about it.

4. If a stranger wants to talk to you or asks for directions, don’t talk to them. Run away and tell an adult.

5. Stay at least 5 giant steps away from the curb or road

6. If a stranger follows you while walking to or from the bus stop, get away from them as fast as you can, run quickly in the other direction and yell “HELP” in a loud voice

7. If someone makes you uncomfortable even if you know them, tell your parents, a teacher or another adult that you trust.

Encourage your children to know their family name, address, and phone number so they will be able to give that information to an adult if they need help. Let’s give our children not only the school supplies and clothes they need to have a successful school year but also supply them with the information they need to be safe at the bus stop.
