More than 600 public, private and home-school students participating in this year’s Thomas Alva Edison Regional Science and Inventor Fair on Saturday at Alico Arena. More than 200 judges worked Saturday during the 58th-annual event to evaluate students’ entries in the two, separate competitions: the inventor fair for student’s kindergarten through 12th grade, and the larger science fair, for student’s sixth grade and up.
Rick Tully, science fair’s director and a recently retired Lee teacher, said he has been amazed how the fair has grown in the 17 years he has been involved. He estimates the event takes about $600,000 and more than 400 volunteers to pull off.
•The inventor’s fair awards ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Edison Park Elementary. Prizes will be awarded to top four entries in each grade level; division winners and special category winners will also be announced.
•The science and engineering fair awards ceremony will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. Tuesday at FGCU’s Alico Arena. Dozens of scholarships to local universities will be awarded, and top entries will continue to the state and international science fairs.
