Thesaurus Days kicked off recently as the Rotary Club of Lehigh Acres, assisted by volunteers, were greeted by the children and facility at the Veterans Park Academy for the Arts.
The children were brought to the cafeteria to receive their very own thesaurus.
Once the children were seated, club President Mike Neven gave a short presentation explaining that Rotary is a community service organization made up of businessmen and professionals. They do work within their communities, as well as internationally.
The local club provides dictionaries to all third-grade students and thesauruses to all fourth-grade students attending public schools in Lehigh Acres.
This year, the club will give out over 1,600 thesauruses to fourth-grade students attending the nine elementary schools in the Lehigh. This is approximately 150 more books than last year.
The books are provided at no cost to the students or schools.
The Lehigh Rotary is the only club that hands out thesauruses in Lee County.
The fourth-grade thesaurus project supports G. Weaver Hipps, Harns Marsh, Lehigh Elementary, Mirror Lakes, Sunshine Elementary, Tortuga Preserve, Veterans Park, Alva and Gateway Elementary
