With record rain this week could bring more mosquitoes to our area. Some of them are capable of carrying the dangerous disease chikungunya fever.
The state health department says four people have been infected this year, after getting bitten by mosquitoes in Florida. At this point, none of those cases are in southwest Florida.
The Lee County Mosquito Control District is spraying almost every day, at times.

Lee County Mosquito Control District is also on the lookout to combat chikungunya, a disease that’s carried by two types of mosquitoes in southwest Florida.
“We do believe that this is probably going to be a trend for a while. That we will be seeing it,” said Redovan.
Unlike mosquitoes that live in swamps ones that carry chikungunya are urban mosquitoes, which means they live near homes in small amounts of water, like your dog bowl or bird feeder.
