In a three-to-one vote, the Lee County school board decided to opt out of state-mandated testing. This makes Lee County the first school district in Florida to do so.
Over 200 parents were at the meeting to protest the tests. Some don’t even have children in the district, but are supporting the idea in Lee County – which could set a precedent statewide.
We spoke with several parents, groups and advocates over the last few weeks who say they are sick of their children suffering from these tests.
One parent told us third grade students were held back because they failed the exams, but excelled in the classroom.
Another parent says their children now believe they can’t read because the tests tell them they cannot – even though their grades show otherwise.
Now, the school district could face several ramifications. Those consequences include funding cuts to the district and keeping students from graduating.
