Today is a very sad day in Lehigh Acres. Lehigh Acres Gazette learned that Lee County Volunteers in Medicine possibly closing its Lehigh Acres operations. In a few days from now the free medical clinic; that many people supported may have to close its doors unless it finds a new office to serve the community.
The Lee County VIM – Compassionate Care Clinic in Lehigh Ares opened nearly three year ago. Since then the clinic has scheduled more than 2200 doctor visits. Most of these visits have reduced the volume at the local emergency rooms and urgent care facilities in Lehigh Acres and Lee County.
In a 2013 report, “We have a waiting list with people who have called and are waiting to come in and see a doctor,” said Andrea Kuzbyt, Executive Director of Lee County Volunteers in Medicine.
If the Compassionate Care Clinic cannot find a suitable home in Lehigh Acres, they will forced to send Lehigh Acres medically needy and uninsured to the Heights Foundation free clinic in the Harlem Heights area of Fort Myers.
According to board members they are working diligently to relocate the facilities in Lehigh Acres before the deadline.
The clinic on Lee Blvd. is the only place east of US 41 in Lee County, for the uninsured can go completely for free.
