Funding is now available to expand Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres to four lanes from Sunrise Boulevard to Alabama Road.
The project has been in the works for years but there was insufficient funding last year for the $13.5 million project to proceed.
Now, funding from Lee County Department of Transportation is available.
Residents said safety is currently a big issue with the roadway.
Widening the road would straighten out some of the turns, which may decrease crashes such as three major incidents that occurred during the past three months.
Lee County Commissioners will discuss the project Tuesday, including discussion of condemnation of parts of the area to move forward.
The project would begin in 2015, with completion expected by 2017.
