Monday, May 26, will be a special ceremony held by American Legion Post 323 and the VFW Post at 4174 at Lee Memorial Park Cemetery at 12777 SR82. The program is set to begin at 10 a.m. and continue for about an hour.
“The program is to honor all veterans who have served and given their lives in battle for this country,” Mason said. “We also have a Veterans Day ceremony in November at Veterans Park in Lehigh and that is to honor all veterans, living and deceased.”
VFW will supply both a firing squad and the Honor Guard.
Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored and neglected.
While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades and services, many have not held a program in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.
The veteran organizations in Lehigh plan to always hold ceremonies honoring their fallen comrades.
