Incandescent Light Bulbs

Consumer Alert. It’s one the most popular light bulbs on the market, but starting January 1, by law, production will end on 60- and 40-watt incandescent light bulbs.

This all started back in 2007 when then-President George W. Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act.

It’s a law that led the government to slowly start phasing out the higher wattage bulbs — eventually eliminating them completely.

“In 2012 the 100-watt light bulbs went away, stopped making those January 1, 2012, then in 2013 they stopped making the 75-watt bulbs,” said Lowe’s Store Manager Ron Wotring,

Now in 2014, the production will cease for 60- and 40-watt bulbs.

But it’s not all incandescent bulbs that are going away, the experts at Lowe’s say if specialty bulbs are your preference you’re safe from a transition for now.

You’ll also be able to buy whatever bulbs stores have left after the first of the year.

But some already have glowing reviews about the alternatives that will keep them from stocking up.

It’s still perfectly legal to own and buy incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent aren’t going anywhere either — those are the spiral looking bulbs.
