Dry Weather Sparks Brush
Fire Concerns in Lehigh Acres

Dry and windy weather means the battle begins against brush fires in Lehigh Acres.

On Wednesday, the Florida Forest Service crushed brush near homes in Lehigh Acres. The goal is to reduce danger if and when flames ignite on open lands.

If you’ve got 12 foot high palmetto, you’ve got 24 to 30 foot high flame, said Mike Haschel, with the Florida Forest Service.

Experts tell us Southwest Florida’s hot spots lay in what’s known as the “wildland urban interface.” That’s areas where there are houses surrounded by brush, like Lehigh Acres.

With the ground ready to burn, experts say only common sense and preventive measures can protect our paradise.

The number one cause of brush fires is humans making poor choices.
