FGCU Invites Public, Media to “The Community Speaks” Lecture Series

The Office of Community Outreach at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) invites the public and media to its annual “The Community Speaks” lecture series, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 in Edwards Hall, Room 112.

This year, the lecture features the first Minority Legislative Panel with Florida elected officials serving on the panel. Sen. Dwight Bullard, Rep. Cynthia Stafford, Rep. Shevrin D. Jones; as well as Yolanda Cash Jackson, government law attorney at Becker & Poliakoff, will lead the discussion.

Topics of discussion include: The Pathway to Politics for Minorities; Issues Affecting Bright Future Scholarships for Minority Students; and Changes to Section 4b of the Voters Rights Act.

The mission of the Office of Community Outreach is to foster strong university-community partnerships that increase the visibility, accountability, and participation of the university in the surrounding Southwest Florida community, assist with the recruitment and retention efforts of the university, and create a cohesive support system for students from traditionally underserved or underrepresented backgrounds. In keeping with this mission, we sponsor The Community Speaks lecture series, which features minority community leaders in and around Southwest Florida.
