A hurricane hunter plane flying in the storm could no longer find a circulation. So, by definition, this disturbance is no longer a card-carrying tropical storm. Rather, it is a nameless, strong tropical wave–though still producing winds gusting to 40-45 mph in some heavy rain squalls.
What’s left of Chantal is passing just south of Haiti, with a large area of showers and thunderstorms covering much of Hispaniola. There remains a slight chance that Chantal might be able to reorganize at some point down the road. But with some pretty strong wind shear and high mountains over eastern Cuba, the chances of getting a name back look pretty small.
