Today was the 56th annual Thomas Alva Edison Science and Engineering Fair and the 25th annual Thomas A. Edison Regional Inventors Fair it was held at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Alico Arena. Approximately 800 Southwest Florida private, public and home schooled students did participate and competing for over $900,000 in scholarships.
FGCU hosted a celebration of science across the FGCU campus throughout the morning and early afternoon. Free shuttle buses will operate to take students, their families and the public to a series of professional laboratory demonstrations featuring a variety of science disciplines. Activities included separate demonstrations on criminal forensics, mosquito control, a solar energy field and a wetlands walk. FGCU also conducting free campus tours throughout the day in conjunction with the Science and Inventors Fair. Also SCIENCE LIVE a new project by the Edison & Ford Winter Estate was conducted outside of Alico Arena.
Liddy Green said, “What I learned today, the young ones are amazingly brilliant. The ideas they came up with were so simple yet so complex. It truly shows you how a young fresh mind can think. Who would have thought that bacteria grows more on a face with no makeup versus a completely made up face. Gatorade will probably not like to hear, that good old fashion orange juice contains more electrolytes than their highly publicized product. Fleas and ticks have less chance of living if you use the drops over the highly medicated shampoo! I truly wish I had more time to see all the great ideas, but I can truly say today I was enlightened by a very intelligent group of young fresh minds!”
