FGUA Introduces Its First Annual Lee County Water Awareness Poster Contest

The Florida Governmental Utility Authority (FGUA) is pleased to announce the kick-off of the 2013 Lee County Water Awareness Poster Contest. The contest seeks to educate elementary school children about the importance of good stewardship of water resources and heighten awareness about their water supply, quality, and distribution process. This year’s theme is “The Adventures of Drippy”.

The program emphasizes how drinking water gets from its source to resident’s homes and provides the opportunity for students to express themselves creatively, while sharing an important water conservation message. Students will be able to demonstrate that water is not just something we use to drink and clean, but can also be the basis of artistic inspiration. By participating, elementary school children learn how water gets from the aquifer to their home by watching the journey of a water droplet named Drippy, as he travels through all of the infrastructure that make potable water possible for residents. After learning about the process during the presentation provided by FGUA staff, the children will create posters illustrating the process. Posters will be collected and categorized by grade level with awards given for the posters that best illustrate the process water takes from its source to the home. Awards include passes to various attractions provided by local sponsors for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners as well as a pizza party for the class of the poster contest winner.

Through this program, the goal is to create awareness amongst students regarding water as a limited resource and to ensure the responsible utilization of water for a sustainable future.

Open registration for the contest begins February 11th, 2013. For additional information, to register or to sponsor the contest pleases contact Lori Salgado at (239)543-1005, lsalgdao@govmserv.com or Donna Lizotte at (239) 303-0459, dlizotte@govmser.com.
