800 Southwest Florida Students to Compete For Over $900,000 in Scholarships

On Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 over 800 students will participate in the Thomas A. Edison Regional Science and Inventors Fair.  Public school, private school and home schooled students from Southwest Florida will be competing at the Florida Gulf Coast Alico Arena for over $900,000 in scholarships from local universities and colleges. This signature event of the Edison Festival of Light will be showcasing the extraordinary work and projects of over 400 Science Fair participants and over 300 ingenious inventions of students.  Judging begins at 8 AM and the Fairs are open to the public beginning at 3 PM. Multiple Science, Technology, Engineering and Math events will be staged the same day as the Fair across the FGCU campus.

Media representatives are encouraged to contact Jim Helms, Inventors Fair Co-Chair at jimbhelms@hotmail.com to make arrangements for access to the Fairs and for an inside look at the this major Southwest Florida educational event and celebration.

The Thomas Alva Edison Regional Science and Inventor Fairs (TAERSIF) Steering Committee works year-round to organize the Regional event that hosts more than 800 local students who have already won at their individual school Fairs. The Regional Fair and underwriting for student expenses for the Fairs is possible because of the support largely from the Fort Myers Kiwanis Club, Lee County Public Schools, Charlotte County Public Schools and strong support from The Edison Festival of Light, Florida Gulf Coast University, Hodges University, Edison State College, Newton Scholarships and numerous other partners such as The Edison & Ford Winter Estates, The Imaginarium, Sony Electronics and The Home Depot.
