Cancellations and Closures

LEE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Based on the latest information and projections concerning the impact Tropical Storm Isaac will have on the Southwest Florida community, Lee County Public Schools has made the decision to close all schools and District offices on Monday, August 27th.

The District has been in close communication with Lee County Emergency Management officials and it is the judgment that closing schools and District offices Monday, August 27th is necessary. Officials have issued a Tropical Storm Watch for parts of Southwest Florida while other areas are under a Hurricane Warning.

As the storm passes, as soon as possible Monday pre-identified District staff will perform an assessment on District facilities, roadways, etc. to gauge the condition of schools, offices and other vital infrastructure essential to the operation of the school system.

After this assessment Monday a decision will be made about the status of the District moving forward during the week, and that information/decision will be shared with the media and community as soon as possible.

Sunstate Academy

Sunstate Academyis announcing they will be closed Monday August 27th due to hurricane Isaac. Sunstate Academy is located at the corner of Colonial Blvd and US 41 in Fort Myers, Florida.

FGCU closure
Due to the projected path of Tropical Storm Isaac, Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) will be closed starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 26 through Monday, August 27.

All FGCU day and night classes and activities on the main campus and at off-campus locations are canceled.  Student Housing and SoVi Dining will remain open, but Housing staff is encouraging residential students to go home for the weekend and Monday if possible.

FGCU will reopen for regular operations at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, August 28 unless prevented by weather conditions.  Should additional announcements be necessary, they will be provided via media advisories, emails, and announcements on the FGCU Web site.

Hodges University
With the decision by the National Weather Service to place the Southwestern region of Florida under a hurricane warning in preparation for the arrival of Tropical Storm Isaac, Dr. Terry McMahan, President of Hodges University, has announced that the institution will be closed on Monday, August 27, and will reopen on Tuesday, August 28.  This announcement is for both the Fort Myers and Naples campuses, as well as the Learning Site in Immokalee.

Edison State College
Due to Tropical Storm Isaac, Edison State College officials have announced the college will be closed beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2012 for both employees and students. Classes and activities scheduled for Monday, August 27, 2012 are cancelled. This includes the campuses in Fort Myers, Naples, Punta Gorda and the center in LaBelle

Classes will be held as scheduled on Friday and Saturday, August 24 and 25.

The college plans to re-open on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, but it is advisable to visit www.edison.edu, the college’s Facebook page, on Twitter @EdisonState and the local media for any additional announcements. The college also has the latest in weather and storm safety information at http://www.edison.edu/publicsafety/.

Orthopedic Center of Florida will be closed on Monday August 27th

The Edison & Ford Winter Estates will be closed on Sunday, August 26 and Monday, August 27, 2012 due to current weather forecasts related to Isaac.

Sanibel-Captiva turtle nests

Amanda Bryant with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation says she’s cancelled monitoring for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Potential tropical storm winds could make it unsafe for people to be on the beaches, she says.

Today, she’s using GPS to track nest locations, to help her teams find and track the nests after the storm.

Sanibel Island – Re-entry passes
According to Sanibel’s city manager, they are monitoring the storm. The city hall is extending its hours so residents can pick up their hurricane re-entry passes through 8 p.m. Friday.

Pick up the passes at the Sanibel Police Department at 800 Dunlop Road.

The city will post information to its website regarding Tropical Storm Isaac.

“Ding” Darling closures
The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is closed Saturday August 25 through Tuesday August 28 to take appropriate precautions for Tropical Storm/Hurricane Isaac.

Re-evaluation will be conducted post-storm. The refuge will reopen on Wednesday August 29, if there are no impacts.
