Nearly everyone likes trees and the beauty they bring to our area, but if not properly maintained, trees near power lines can cause problems for both you and your electric provider. Tree limbs that touch or fall on power lines can cause electrical outages, property damage and fires. Outages can also affect traffic, lights, residents on life-support systems and other vital public facilities.
LCEC recommends special attention when selecting trees to plant in your yard or around your business. Make sure that the height and spread of the trees will remain at least 20 feet away from power lines at maturity. The taller the tree is expected to grow, the further it should be planted from power lines.
In addition, plant trees at least six feet away from underground electrical facilities. To find out where these facilities are located, call Sunshine 811 two full business days before you plant, at 811 or 1-800-432-4770. There is no cost for the service and it could save a life.
LCEC also asks customers to be cautious when trimming trees. Never attempt to prune trees near power lines. Only licensed tree contractors are qualified to work within 10 feet of high voltage lines.
