Special to the Lehigh Acres Gazette

Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” I believe as residents of Lehigh Acres we must stop the insanity.
In just a few months we will most likely have the most important election in the history of Lehigh Acres. I know that many of us dread the election season, however, it is a reality and we must face it. As registered voters, we sometimes accept the status quo, when the truth of the matter is, we create the status quo.
I suggest that in the next few months, we become responsible and informed voters. Lehigh Acres has over 39,000 registered voters and we can make the necessary changes that will be beneficial for our community. Just having 39,000 registered voters is not the answer. The answer to become informed about the candidates that are running for elective office and then vote.
During this time, I know from experience what most of us do. It is one of two things. Either we vote by name recognition, for those individuals that have been in office for many years and get their names in the local papers. The other thing is even worse. We decide that because we don’t study the issues or the people that are running for office, we simply choose not to vote in that race.Just because someone has held a certain elected office for several years, doesn’t mean they are the right person for the future of our community. Sometimes those who hold on to a position for many years become comfortable and possessive. They become powerful without accountability.
Those in elected positions are only held accountable on Election Day. Many don’t want the public to know their positions on the issues and their support for the future of our community. They hope we accept what they want us to hear. As you know, sometimes we can’t trust the candidates to be completely honest about themselves or, those running against them. Speeches and advertisements are largely half truths or tearing down their opponents by building themselves up.
So how can we become more informed in these next few months? Let me suggest to you that there is a non-partisan group of Lehigh Acres residents called “Lehigh Acres First.” This group of individuals was formed to seek out qualified candidates to run for public office, that are willing to pledge their support to the citizens of our community, and who have the best interest of those who call Lehigh Acres home.
Whatever we do we must become informed voters, and make sure that this election season doesn’t reflect the past. I for one am tired of the insanity!! Let’s make a difference and get out to vote. It will change our community for the better!!!
Great editorial! I like the opening statement. 🙂

I do agree, change is now needed !!!! About time someone gets it!!!
We have lived here for 19 years. Had been coming to visit family in Lehigh since the early ’70’s. If we were to check out Lehigh as far as a possible place to live now, we would not even consider it. When you drive down Leeland Heights Blvd. , it is a mess. Do we still have code enforcement? There are empty (?) homes, with the grass needing mowed badly, 3 or 4 cars parked on the lawns, . It is disgraceful. Let’s clean up Lehigh and have some pride in our town. As far as our flearket, what is wrong with making it a nice farmer’s market? W would love to see this.
Please inform us how to join Lehigh First. Thanks.
I want to thank the Station 1 Fire Dept of Lehigh Acres for their support and kindness. My cat “Squeek” was chased up a tree on Saturday evening by a bear and was so afraid he would not come down. He was up the tree for 16 hours till they came and rescued him. I want to thank Sarah, Dave, Lee and Jeremy for their support in the rescue. They are a blessing to the community of Lehigh.
God Bless you all,
Kim
