Duke University has released the results of their 2011/12 Academic Talent Search, known as the Talent Identification Program (TIP.) Duke University conducts the program, which seeks to identify academically talented middle school students in a 16 state area.

One aspect of the TIP Program is giving middle school students the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT, tests that are normally for advanced high school students. This year, 218 seventh-graders in middle schools across the county took the SAT or ACT test while still in the seventh grade (up from 194 last year.) The results of the testing showed the following:

75 students qualified for State Recognition;

5 students qualified for Grand Recognition;

54 students qualified for Academy for Summer Studies;

and 31 students qualified for Center for Summer Studies.

“We’re very proud of these young adults for their accomplishment – this is a tremendous honor that highlights their exceptional academic ability,” said Dr. Joseph Burke, Superintendent of Schools.

* Denotes Grand Recognition Winners

This program identifies academically talented seventh-graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. Scores in the 95th percentile on the national norms of a standardized achievement, aptitude or mental ability test qualify for the program. Candidates are identified and invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination.

The goal is to assist young people with excellent mathematical or verbal aptitude. Students are provided with information about their abilities and introduced to a network of services and programs. Students are encouraged to enroll for several reasons:

To pursue an above-level testing experience, which will provide them with more information about their academic abilities; this information can help teachers, parents, and students plan effectively for the coming high school years;

To learn more about their academic abilities and be able to compare the results with other academically able youth;

To learn more about educational opportunities and options for the future;

To receive recognition of their outstanding achievements.
