Are Hugs Important?

But hugs are now off limits at one New Jersey middle school.

The district says Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School Principal Tyler Blackmore (Email  tblackmore@marsd.k12.nj.us) made an announcement that students were in a “no hugging at school” following some “incidents of unsuitable, physical interactions.”

School Superintendent David Healy says the district has the responsibility to teach children about appropriate interactions.

The superintendent says despite the rule, students who hug will not be suspended.

The superintendent says he believes the principal acted responsibly.

The Gazette found this simple poem from by Meredith Hoover, age 12 which would make her a middle school student somewhere.

Hugs are Important

There’s something in a simple hug,
That always warms the heart.
It welcomes back home,
And makes it easier to part.

A hug is a way to share the joy
And sad times we go through,
Or just a way for friends to say
They like you ’cause you’re you.

Hugs are meant for anyone
For whom we really care,
From your grandma to your neighbor,
Or a cuddly teddy bear.

A hug is an amazing thing–
Its just the perfect way
To show the love we’re feeling
But can’t find the words to say.

It’s how a little hug
Makes everyone feel good;
In every place and language,
It’s always understood.

And hugs don’t need new equipment,
Special batteries or parts-
Just open your arms
And open your hearts.
