Mitchell \u2013 United States Postal Service<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Special to the Gazette<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stamp-out-hunger-large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9602\" title=\"stamp out hunger large\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stamp-out-hunger-large-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stamp-out-hunger-large-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/stamp-out-hunger-large.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Thanks to the generosity of customers and employees, the 2012 \u201cStamp Out Hunger\u201dFood Drivewas a resounding success.<\/p>\n<p>Locally,Lee County netted 301,295 pounds of food and Collier county reported collections of 269,340 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Many local food pantries receive the donations that were collected.\u00a0 At one local food pantry a young boy was able to select a box of pop tarts and he excitedly told his mother, \u201cOh boy, now maybe my friends will come to my house to play again.\u201d\u00a0 Another child proclaimed, \u201cWow, look at all the food we have now\u201d because his family had received some vegetables!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Postal Service, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), Feeding America, the Campbell Soup Company, and other partner organizations&#8211;including the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and other USPS employees\u2014worked together and collected more than 70.5 million pounds of food during the nation\u2019s largest single-day food drive.<\/p>\n<p>This year marked the 20th anniversary of the 2012 \u201cStamp Out Hunger Food Drive\u201d and was the ninth consecutive time donations totaled more than 70 million pounds. Since the program began in 1992, more than 1 billion pounds of food has been collected to help feedAmerica\u2019s hungry.<\/p>\n<p>Recent statistics indicate that about 50 million Americans&#8211;including 17 million children&#8211;now live in families that lack sufficient food.\u00a0 These results will enable the food pantries across the country to help feed the 50 million Americans, one-third of them children, who live in families that lack sufficient food.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the Postal Service on www.twitter.com\/USPS and at <a title=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/USPS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/USPS\">www.facebook.com\/USPS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Zip\u2019s Tip: <\/strong>The Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers hold the largest one-day food drive in the nation\u2014on the second Saturday in May.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Debra J.
