Congressman Connie Mack presented the Congressional Badge of Bravery to two local\u00a0law enforcement officials who risked their lives to protect others during a deadly shooting.<\/p>\n

In the early morning hours of\u00a0Saturday, April 24, 2010, deputies responded to a possible suicide\u00a0at a private residence in the Lehigh Acres community.\u00a0 Upon arrival, a 44 year old male was found\u00a0staggering down the driveway.\u00a0 He had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.\u00a0 Paramedics responded, but the man succumbed to his injury.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the scene was secured, the mother of the victim\u00a0was found in her hospital bed inside the residence.\u00a0 She had not been injured.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the caller, who had initially notified the Sheriff’s Office 9-1-1 operator,\u00a0arrived on the scene and identified the victim\u00a0in the driveway as her husband, not the\u00a0brother who was feared suicidal.<\/p>\n

A search for the 40-year old-brother was initiated inside the home.\u00a0 He was observed\u00a0hiding under a bed and\u00a0armed with a .45 caliber UZI submachine gun.\u00a0 Deputies\u00a0directed him to\u00a0surrender, but instead he began shooting at the deputies.\u00a0 The deputies were forced to return fire to bring an end to the deadly confrontation.<\/p>\n

An independent review of the shooting confirmed the deputies were justified in their use of deadly force and the gunman was also responsible for the death of his older brother.<\/p>\n

Congressman Mack presented Sergeant Pat McDonald and Deputy Ryan Justham with the Congressional Badge of Bravery at an award\u00a0ceremony this afternoon in the training room of the\u00a0Lee County Sheriff’s\u00a0Office.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
