Did you know that a South Florida woman<\/a> who has lived in the U.S. illegally for two decades, is now facing a $1.82 million fine<\/a> from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for failing to leave the country after receiving a removal order in 2005?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman, a 41-year-old mother of three children, and only known as, \u201cMaria\u201d, has been living in the United States unlawfully since 2005. The fine was issued on May 9, 2025 via the ICE, civil fines department. The woman\u2019s lawyer, Michelle Sanchez, has filed a motion to reopen and case dismissed because she has no criminal record and would cause her a \u201chardship\u201d if deported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no indication from Sanchez if Maria will be successful in her pursuit to remain here in the U.S. Under the Biden administration, ICE attorneys were given options and discretion to reopen immigration cases and lift removal orders, but this woman\u2019s case was not reopened due to lack of guidance from the Trump administration regarding prosecutorial discretion according to Sanchez. However, this past February, the Trump administration did in fact announce its plans to penalize those living in the U.S illegally under the 1952 Immigration Act. As Maria\u2019s lawyer is attempting to get her case reopened and knowing ICE is enforcing that ACT, fines will only continue to grow and \u201cMaria\u201d could very well be deported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
