Did you know that Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez has proposed a reduction in our state sales tax?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed legislation would lower our state\u2019s sales tax percentage from 6% to 5.25%, which would result in a $5 billion tax cut per year, making it the largest state tax cut in Florida history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been talk by Governor Ron DeSantis to cut all state property taxes, but the Florida House Speaker is only addressing proposed tax cuts by lowering the sales tax across the state. Perez said that he does support reducing property taxes, but the Florida Legislature doesn\u2019t have the power to do it. There would need to be an amendment placed on a ballot and approved by 60% of the voters. According to Governor DeSantis, he will have that amendment made and on the ballot for the 2026 election year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reduction in sales tax revenue to the state would require identifying and also implementing cuts in state spending. There are currently minimal ideas exactly what cuts would occur and to what agency. Most politicians are hesitant to openly discuss those slashes in the budget most likely due to fear of public backlash. Currently, sales taxes consist of approximately 39% of Florida\u2019s state revenue, making it a significant source of funding for essential services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
