In Hillsborough County, Florida, school bus cameras have been catching drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses, resulting in fines. There is an issue however, there is no way to appeal the automatic finding of guilt. So far, over 55,000 drivers have been cited in just four and a half months of the school year, with fines ranging from $158 to $225 depending on the circumstance of the infraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to some Hillsborough County drivers, they have been fined after viewing the videos of their alleged violations online and fined $225 but later disputed the claim that they were guilty. The county’s agreement with the bus vendor, BusPatrol, states that a stop sign does not need to be fully deployed for a violation to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a possible admission to guilt on their end, the Hillsborough County school district stated that just under 1,500 drivers have already opted to contest their violations, and admitted that there is no current system operational to challenge, or appeal the automatic label of guilt put on each driver. This means that drivers who do wish to contest their violations, cannot do so and are unaware of this limitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hillsborough County School District, the Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office, and the camera company BusPatrol all profit from the fines paid by drivers. BusPatrol receives $65 for every violation paid in the county and an additional monthly flat fee of $225 for every camera system installed on each bus. One must ask if the entire BusPatrol school bus camera scheme is just another way to fleece Floridians from their money.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
