The district says Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School<\/a> Principal Tyler Blackmore (Email \u00a0tblackmore@marsd.k12.nj.us<\/a>) made an announcement that students were in a “no hugging at school” following some “incidents of unsuitable, physical interactions.”<\/p>\n

School Superintendent David Healy says the district has the responsibility to teach children about appropriate interactions.<\/p>\n

The superintendent says despite the rule, students who hug will not be suspended.<\/p>\n

The superintendent says he believes the principal acted responsibly.<\/p>\n

The Gazette<\/em> found this simple poem from by Meredith Hoover, age 12 which would make her a middle school student somewhere.<\/p>\n

Hugs are Important<\/strong><\/p>\n

There’s something in a simple hug,
\nThat always warms the heart.
\nIt welcomes back home,
\nAnd makes it easier to part.<\/p>\n

A hug is a way to share the joy
\nAnd sad times we go through,
\nOr just a way for friends to say
\nThey like you ’cause you’re you.<\/p>\n

Hugs are meant for anyone
\nFor whom we really care,
\nFrom your grandma to your neighbor,
\nOr a cuddly teddy bear.<\/p>\n

A hug is an amazing thing–
\nIts just the perfect way
\nTo show the love we’re feeling
\nBut can’t find the words to say.<\/p>\n

It’s how a little hug
\nMakes everyone feel good;
\nIn every place and language,
\nIt’s always understood.<\/p>\n

And hugs don’t need new equipment,
\nSpecial batteries or parts-
\nJust open your arms
