{"id":58461,"date":"2023-07-28T20:00:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T00:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=58461"},"modified":"2023-07-28T20:00:42","modified_gmt":"2023-07-29T00:00:42","slug":"scheduled-temporary-modification-of-disinfection-treatment-process-priority-customer-notification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2023\/07\/scheduled-temporary-modification-of-disinfection-treatment-process-priority-customer-notification\/","title":{"rendered":"Scheduled Temporary Modification of Disinfection Treatment Process &#8211; Priority Customer Notification"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong>&nbsp;Lehigh Acres, FL \u2013 Lehigh Acres Service Area<br><strong>When:<\/strong>&nbsp;August 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;\u2013 August 21st &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beginning Tuesday, August 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2023,<\/strong>\u00a0the Florida Governmental Utility Authority (FGUA) will be conducting system flushing and temporarily changing the disinfection process for the drinking water supply in the Lehigh Acres service area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"880\" height=\"605\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/download-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/download-2.jpg 880w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/download-2-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/download-2-768x528.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The FGUA conducts system flushing as part of its prudent utility practice.&nbsp; Flushing will remove sediment from the system that has been in the pipes for a long time.&nbsp; Sediment left in the pipes has led to odor and discoloration in some communities, which occurs as chlorine that is used to treat the water subsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the FGUA temporarily changes the disinfection process, the water will be disinfected with free chlorine rather than combined chlorine\/ammonia (chloramines).&nbsp; This conversion to free chlorine (which is a stronger, faster-acting disinfectant) from chloramines (which is a longer-lasting disinfectant) allows the FGUA to perform a water distribution system purge as recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection for water utilities using chloramines as their primary disinfectant.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>This temporary change in disinfection is expected to end Monday, August 21<sup>st<\/sup>, 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This process will not cause adverse health effects.
