The latest barometric pressure was noted to be 1008 MB.

Though Bret isn’t expected to bring impacts to the United States, areas of the Lesser Antilles should be prepared for tropical storm-force winds by late Thursday.

The latest forecast models are in much better agreement with the track of Tropical Storm Bret in the next five to seven days. The consensus between the models shown below brings the storm to the eastern Caribbean where it will likely struggle to stay organized with so much wind shear and comparatively drier air.

Tropical Storm Bret formed in a part of the ocean we don’t normally see many systems spin up in during the month of June. Oftentimes this time of year this part of the ocean isn’t warm enough for robust tropical development, as its areas around the Gulf and off the eastern U.S. where typically water temperatures are warm enough.

This year though, there is an abundance of warm ocean water in the Atlantic. The map below is a sea surface temperature anomaly map. The darker the red, the warmer the ocean temperatures are compared with what’s typical for today’s date. The darker the blue, the cooler the water temperatures are for this time of year.

The unusually warm water in this part of the Atlantic is a major factor why Tropical Storm Bret and the disturbance following it off the west coast of Africa are managing to show development signs that in other years would not have been as likely.

Tropical Storm Bret as it moves westward across the Atlantic Ocean.
