{"id":58038,"date":"2023-06-02T14:19:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T18:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=58038"},"modified":"2023-06-02T14:19:04","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T18:19:04","slug":"tropical-storm-arlene-forms-in-the-gulf-of-mexico-west-of-florida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2023\/06\/tropical-storm-arlene-forms-in-the-gulf-of-mexico-west-of-florida\/","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Arlene forms in the Gulf of Mexico west of Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/text\/refresh\/MIATCPAT2+shtml\/021433.shtml?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tropical Storm Arlene<\/a>&nbsp;has formed west of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a 2 p.m. advisory from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Hurricane Center.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tropical storm, the second storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, continues to move south at 5 mph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"897\" height=\"736\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/172556_5day_cone_with_line_and_wind.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/172556_5day_cone_with_line_and_wind.png 897w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/172556_5day_cone_with_line_and_wind-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/172556_5day_cone_with_line_and_wind-768x630.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 897px) 100vw, 897px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Arlene isn&#8217;t expected to remain a tropical storm for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hurricane Center predicted it will weaken later tonight, becoming a remnant low Saturday as it runs into wind shear and dry air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 11 a.m., the Hurricane Center warned that while it is unlikely, the possibility of &#8220;a short-lived increase to tropical storm intensity cannot be ruled out.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida residents could see 1 to 2 inches of rain, with up to 5 inches possible in some locations, through Saturday, although forecasters said the rain is not directly related to the depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the first named storm of the 2023 season is Arlene, it will actually be the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theledger.com\/story\/weather\/hurricane\/2023\/05\/11\/national-hurricane-center-classifies-january-system-subtropical-storm\/70208074007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second storm of the season.<\/a>&nbsp;A system in January was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/archive\/text\/PNSNHC\/2023\/PNSNHC.202305111500.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classified in May as a subtropical storm<\/a>. Since the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theledger.com\/story\/weather\/hurricane\/2023\/05\/22\/national-hurricane-center-describes-why-january-subtropical-storm-not-arlene-live-advisories\/70243070007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classification came during a post analysis,<\/a>&nbsp;it did not get a name and will be documented as &#8220;Unnamed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weakening is expected to begin later tonight, and the system is forecast to become a remnant low Saturday, according to the 2 p.m. advisory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles northeast of the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Location: 265 miles west of Fort Myers; 230 miles west of Sarasota<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum wind speed: 40 mph<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direction: south at 5 mph<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Arlene&nbsp;has formed west of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a 2 p.m. advisory from the&nbsp;National Hurricane Center.
