{"id":57775,"date":"2023-04-21T11:21:31","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T15:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=57775"},"modified":"2023-04-21T11:21:37","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T15:21:37","slug":"facebook-users-can-apply-for-their-portion-of-a-725-million-lawsuit-settlement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2023\/04\/facebook-users-can-apply-for-their-portion-of-a-725-million-lawsuit-settlement\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook users can apply for their portion of a $725 million lawsuit settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Facebook users can now apply for their share of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/12\/23\/1145303268\/facebook-meta-cambridge-analytica-privacy-settlement\">$725 million privacy lawsuit settlement<\/a>&nbsp;if they had accounts from May 2007 to December 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ap23109660238212-7a51b187a786161b7e94c28d2ea0471799a2ee94-s900-c85.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57776\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s parent company, Meta, is doling out the payments to settle a lawsuit alleging it allowed Cambridge Analytica, a former British political consulting firm used by the 2016 Donald Trump presidential campaign, to access about 87 million users&#8217; personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for the funds, people can<a href=\"https:\/\/facebookuserprivacysettlement.com\/#submit-claim\">&nbsp;apply online<\/a>&nbsp;or by mailing their forms by Aug. 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The form requires you to input your name, address, contact information, birthday, Facebook handle and payment information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Cambridge Analytica allegedly paid Facebook developers for user data, which was then used to target voters in the 2016 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the scandal surfaced, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg fielded questions from members of the U.S. Congress, who accused him of failing to protect the data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook users can now apply for their share of a&nbsp;$725 million privacy lawsuit settlement&nbsp;if they had accounts from May 2007 to December 2022.
