That\u2019s why it\u2019s critical to \u201cTurn and Test\u201d and take these lifesaving steps to stay safe from home fires \u2014 the nation\u2019s most frequent disaster:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hc_smoke_alarm-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hc_smoke_alarm-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hc_smoke_alarm-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hc_smoke_alarm-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hc_smoke_alarm.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Install smoke alarms on every level of your home,<\/strong>&nbsp;including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Test alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year if your model requires it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older.<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Check the date of your smoke alarms and follow the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Practice your two-minute escape&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/content\/dam\/redcross\/atg\/PDF_s\/Preparedness___Disaster_Recovery\/Disaster_Preparedness\/Home_Fire\/Home_Fire_Escape_Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>plan<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;Make sure everyone in your household can get out in less than two minutes \u2014 the amount of time you may have to get out of a burning home before it\u2019s too late. Include at least two ways to get out from every room and select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor\u2019s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone knows where to meet.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like.<\/strong>&nbsp;Talk about fire safety and what to do in an emergency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs many as seven people die in this country every day from a home fire, but smoke alarms cut your risk in half,\u201d said Ryan Logan, Regional Disaster Officer, South Florida Red Cross. \u201cProtect your household this weekend. You can also download our free Emergency app by searching for \u201cAmerican Red Cross\u201d in app stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/get-help\/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies\/types-of-emergencies\/fire\/prevent-home-fire.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN SAVING LIVES<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;The Red Cross responds to more than 60,000 disasters every year and most of them are home fires. To help prevent fire-related deaths and injuries, the Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign with community partners in 2014 to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, with support from thousands of community partners, the campaign met its goal of installing&nbsp;<strong>2.5 million free smoke alarms<\/strong>&nbsp;and making&nbsp;<strong>1 million households<\/strong>&nbsp;safer across the country.
