Lauren Book \u2014 includes several provisions that would ensure the safety of canines when inside a moving vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If passed, a dog would not be allowed to \u201cextend its head or any other body part outside a motor vehicle window while the person is operating the motor vehicle on a public roadway,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2023\/932\/BillText\/Filed\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the bill states.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill would greatly limit how a dog could be situated inside a vehicle. Canines would need to be secured either by a harness or pet seat belt that is specifically designed for the car \u2014 and would not be restrained at the neck \u2014 or inside a crate that adheres to particular size regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"828\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/The-bill-was-sponsored-by-Democratic-state-Sen.-Lauren-Book.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57307\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bill was sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Lauren Book.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs may be held in a person\u2019s lap if a crate or harness is not available, so long as it is not the driver of the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who neglect the new rules could be charged with a misdemeanor, the proposed law states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Book does not explain in the bill itself why she is seeking to enact the animal welfare regulations, but the American Humane Society had recommended the same rules in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/fact-sheet\/remember-safety-while-driving-with-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">June 2022 driving safety fact sheet.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNever allow pets to stick any portion of their bodies out the window,\u201d the animal advocacy group stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough most dogs love to stick their heads out open windows, the wind can seriously irritate mucous membranes and blow pieces of grit or other debris into their eyes. Pets could also be seriously injured by objects as you drive down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Book did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hefty animal welfare law includes many sections that cover a plethora of protections for furry friends, including prohibiting cat declawing unless necessary for medical therapy, rabbit sales before Easter and tethering of domestic pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill would also ban cosmetic testing on animals for any product \u2014 including cleansers, beauty treatments, shampoos, etc. \u2014 that would only be created for human application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another provision would allow courts to ban offenders from owning animals as a condition of probation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everything\u2019s just so doggone paw-litical.
