According to the Fort Myers Police Department, Police Chief Derrick Diggs has died.<\/p>\n\n\n

FMPD posted the following on Facebook<\/a> on Wednesday morning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn behalf of Acting Chief Pepitone and the entire Fort Myers Police Department family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Police Chief Derrick Diggs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a Facebook post<\/a>, \u201cIn his 46 years as a law enforcement officer in Ohio and Florida, he put service before self and dedicated his life to those he was sworn to protect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2022, Diggs went on family medical leave<\/a>. As recently as December, FMPD indicated that he planned to return to work in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
